From Henry Thorne of North Side Sliders:
I was in the '84 league but had to come back from Michigan for
the finals. I played with Jay Cohen's
North Side Sliders. Jim Parinella was a Throbber back then but he wasn't a
major part of that team as he was a rookie guy that couldn't do much
yet. It wasn't even clear that he had great potential. He was in fact
kind of an oddball that never said much and always had this pensive
look on his face. He's still like that.
I don't think anyone had an inkling that he would go on to be the best player
in the game. The smartest too IMO.
Another thing I have to say
about that team of Jay's, we were very serious about
conditioning and spent as much time in track workouts as we did
playing. I believed completely that your play level was completely
proportional to what shape you are in and I still believe that.
From Jim Tullio of North Side Sliders:
Our team was called the North Side Slide and we won the championship in
1984 with a dramatic come from behind victory after being down at half 8 to
2 or something like that. Just ask Todd Williams (captain of the Baldwin
Throbbers) he remembers all too well.
From Todd Williams of Baldwin Throbbers:
Henry came back the second year...and the Sliders beat the
Throbbers in the finals..at Devil's Elbow in North Park. In the soon to
become tradition of Pittsburgh Summer League, the field sucked. The
Sliders also brought in another ringer for that game, ex- Penn State
Captain Curt Brooks. Both Henry
and Curt were benched in the second
half as the Sliders made their come from behind victory.
From J Gary Dropcho of North Side Sliders:
The 1984 League was good with the Baldwin Throbbers looking to repeat.
North Side Sliders was probably the leanest squad in numbers and richest in
talent as we blasted through the second half of the schedule to finish with
the best regular season record of 13-2. We advanced to the finals with a bye
and a victory over a scrappy Plaid squad. The Throbbers got to the finals by
beating the Mars Gnu Kidds in a repeat of the ‘83 championship game.
In a well played final, the Sliders and Pipemen traded goals in the first half,
with the Throbbers taking the advantage into halftime leading 9-8.
The Sliders seemed to fall apart immediately after the break, dropping passes,
throwing the disc away, and getting burned deep by Todd "Rod" Williiams’
bombs to Jim Parinella. The Sliders found themselves down 15-9 in
a game to 17 and called a timeout to regroup. The crowd was disappointed and
wanted to see an exciting game and some began to chant ‘Sliders, Sliders’.
We had comeback all season to win games and were determined to do it again.
We scored immediately using a patient dump and swing offense against the Throbber zone.
The Slider D then went to work man to man with Kevin Greener,
Scott Ritter, Mark Licata and J. Gary
getting key stuffs. We scored each time we got the disc and suddenly the game was tied 15-15.
The momentum had swung wildly in our favor, and with Keith Easter
out with injured ribs, we stuffed and scored twice more to win the 84 Summer League Championship.
After the game we picnic-ed until dark, together as friends. What a gas!
