28th Annual Pittsburgh Ultimate Summer League

Register at https://scorereport.net/ultimate/pittsummer/instructions.html

What:

Our annual summer league is an Ultimate Frisbee recreational league consisting of 24 co-ed teams. Each team will follow the standard 5 M / 2 F format, which requires that 5 men and 2 women be on the field at all times. Teams will compete against each other in pool play games and play-offs. The league ends in a final one-day tournament where Summer League Champions will be crowned.

When:

This year's co-ed summer league will take place on six Saturdays in June, July & August plus weeknight games throughout the summer. You will play ~15 regular season games plus a final tournament. The league begins with a kickoff Saturday, June 12th, during which you will get to pick up your gear, meet your teammates, and practice together before playing your first game that same day.

Schedule:

The season will consist of regular season games, followed by playoffs and a one-day finals tournament to crown the champion. Finals is scheduled on August 7th.

The league will run from June 12-August 7, with games both on Saturdays and on weeknights Monday-Thursday. Saturday games will be held at the Norwin Soccer Club's Turner Valley field complex. Weeknight games will be held at fields throughout the city.

Weeknight games will vary depending on your team. These games are on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Saturday games will be held on the following dates:

  • Saturday, June 12 (Kickoff Weekend!)
  • Saturday, June 19
  • Saturday, June 26
  • Saturday, July 17
  • Saturday, July 24
  • Saturday, August 7 (Finals Tournament!)

Where:

All Saturday games will be held at the Norwin Soccer Club's Turner Valley Complex in North Huntingdon.

[Directions]

Weeknight games will be held at locations throughout the city, including:

  • North Park Soccer Complex (Allison Park)
  • Monongahela Playground (South Side)
  • O'Hara Fields (O'Hara Township)
  • McCahill Park (Fox Chapel Borough)

Players under the age of 15 are eligible only if they meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Have been a registered player for Summer League in a prior year.
  2. Have been a registered player for the Pittsburgh High School Ultimate League.
  3. Are granted permission due to special circumstances by the Summer League Commissioners

Players new to Pittsburgh Ultimate Summer League - $39.99

Returning players - $44.99

All players in summer league get a disc, a t-shirt, an end of season party, and opportunities to win great awards and prizes

How are teams determined?

Our summer league uses a draft to create teams. Each team will have a male and female captain pair who will choose players through a ranked drafting procedure. This helps to have an even distribution of experienced and novice players on each team. The draft will take place approximately a week before games begin. After the draft your captains will contact you to let you know which team you are on, and your game schedule. (If you want to sign up with a friend, and want to make sure you play on the same team, when you register, make sure you list your friend as "baggage.")

How do I register?

On-line registration is open and ends at 11:59PM on WEDNESDAY MAY 26th. Please keep in mind, your registration will not be completed until you complete the Google Checkout process at the end of the registration. There will be a NO LATE REGISTRATION. After May 26, absolutely no registrations will be accepted. The on-line registration process is only part of what you need to do to be eligible to participate in the league. You must also submit all requisite payments and paperwork to be eligible, which you should print out from the registration site and bring with you to the first league meeting and turn in to your captain.

This year there will be a CAP on the number of players participating in the league, so register early. If you wait and register during the late registration period, you might not get a chance to play in the league.

For more detailed instructions on registration, view the registration information page

Why is there a cap?

The growth in the number of men playing in Summer League has outpaced the growth of the number of women. Although increasing the number of summer league teams would accommodate the greater number of male participants, this year, we do not feel we will get the required number of female participants to warrant such an increase. As a result, we have chosen to institute a cap on the number of male players. Without the cap, we feel that the playing time for the men would be inadequate and would decrease enjoyment of the league. So, register early, get us your registration fee, and completed waiver as soon as you can to guarantee yourself a spot in this year's Summer League.

Final Tournament Participation:

For this league, in order to participate in finals, a player must attend 25% of their team's regular season games. Based upon this year's expected schedule, this number will be 4 games. If you attend fewer than 4 games, you are not allowed to play in finals.

How do I find out more information?

Most Summer League information is posted here, but we strongly encourage you to register for the B-Board for more announcements and to participate in discussion about Summer League, as well as other leagues, teams, and pickup in the Community for Pittsburgh Ultimate. Please register your username as "Firstname Lastname" or "Firstname_Lastname." All other username formats may be rejected. If you have played in a Pittsburgh Ultimate League before, please check out the Full Player Listing and spell your name exactly as it is spelled there when you register for the B-Board. Please also take the time to fill out your player profile for our Community and Archives.

The 2010 Summer League Commissioners are also available to answer your questions. You can reach David and Darren at sl2010 at pittsburgh-ultimate dot org.
